One thing that most website owners have in common is that they want a good page rank on search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing.
There are many ways to improve your page rank but we have compiled a list of a few easy steps that you can take to ensure that your website content is as optimised as possible for search engines to index. You already have a Drupal CMS website that gives you a few points already since the content in your pages, links, blocks and image descriptions are already visible to search engines. The challenge for you is to make sure that Search Engines understand what your site visitors are looking for and also to invite Search Engines to index your website as often as possible. Search Engine optimisation or SEO should be one of the top priorities in your eMarketing Strategy.
Step 1: Choose your keywords
So many website owners often make the mistake of using keywords that your users won't search for. So the rule of thumb is to "think like a client"
If you have a bakery specialising in beautiful designer cakes then instead of optimising your website for "confectionary" use the phrases "designer cupcakes", "speciality cakes", "wedding cakes" and "birthday cakes" when possible as users are more likely to search for these phrases in search engines when they are looking for a bakery to make a special birthday or wedding cake.
Step 2 : Use your Keywords in the titles of your website pages.
When you are required to name your page use your keywords as often as possible. Your Drupal website has been designed to display your page name as the <Heading 1> tag in the source code. Search engines notices the <Heading 1> tag and knows that this is the heading and a description of what users will be able to find in the rest of the page. The <Heading 1> tag is seen as important to search engines.
Step 3 : Unique and Relevant content
It is important that you give your website visitors useful information about your products and services and that is why search engines deems your page as important when users spend time reading the content of your web page.
Try to use the primary keyword that you chose for your page at least 2 - 3 times in your page content. Be careful of "keyword stuffing" using your keywords over and over again will not only make it difficult for users to read your content but Google will also notice that you are trying to cheat your way to a better page rank.
Step 4 : Name your images
Since seach engines can not see the content that you have on your images it is important that you give your images descriptive names when saving the image as well as complete the "Image Title" and "Image Description" fields. Not only will Google appreciate it and your SEO will improve but users with text-only browsers, missing plug-ins and seeing impaired visitors using screen readers will be able to understand what the image is about that they can not see.
Step 5 : Internal linking
Linking words within your content to the pages on your website where more information about the topic can be found makes it easier for your website visitors to find what they are looking for as well as gives search engines another path to a web page that you want them to index. By using words to link to the page (also called anchor text) also helps Google and visitors understand what the destination page is about. See if you can spot the anchor text linking to other pages on this web page...
Step 6 : Vote for me!!!
Search Engines see a link to your website as a vote of confidence. If you have many links to your web page it means that you have many votes for your web page. The more votes that are cast for a page, the more important the page must be and thus improving your page rank.
