Why should you get a Website?

If that is a question that you often find yourself asking then I can help you get one step closer to the answer.

 The internet and my business

As a young indiviual (not so young anymore since I am on the wrong side of my 20’s and not so individual as I shop at Foshini, go to the Keg for drinks, love eating pasta and cry everytime I watch I Am Sam) working in the webdesign industry I sell a lot of websites - and by 'a lot' I mean not enough to make my boss really proud and give me a raise, but enough to make myself really proud and spoil myself with an extra glass of wine.-

I am going to simplify this paragraph of utter lies to something which contains more truth:

I SELL WEBSITES.

I do believe that this gives me clear insight to online companies and how they grow by being connected on the internet.

To go online or not to go online?  That is the question. (Very rhetorical)

I have decided to make a list of good and bad aspects of a company having an online presence, whether it be a facebook page, a listing on google maps or fully interactive eCommerce website with social media toolbars, corporate blogs, helpful video clips and even a button that you can click on if you want coffee which opens the CD ROM / Cup holder on your computer. (ha.ha.ha.)  I am making these 2 lists based on my personal experience of putting new companies on the internet everyday and also the extensive research I did using the internet and asking other entrepreneurs about this subject.

----------

The advantages of having an online web presence for your new business:

1)  Millions of Potential Customers.

New Customers looking for your business

I have definitely not looked for a company or service using the actual book called Yellow Pages in the last 8 years.  I do however remember my brother betting me once in 1996 that I would not be able to tear one in half. He caught me for a dirty one that day.

2)  Increased customers’ convenience

Improved customer convenience

Prospective clients can see exactly which services you offer even before they contact you, and in this way you avoid saying that dreaded line “No sir, we do not install airconditioners”

3)  a Website makes you a member of the biggest community of the world:

Join the largest community by getting a website

Just like having a mobile phone and a computer, a website is a must-have personal attribute nowadays. The fast developing technologies have converted having a website from a whim into a modern necessity. As of today, almost everyone has a web site, whereas twice as many people are expected to be having their own personal space in the global World Wide Web cosmos in the near future.

4)  24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.

You business can advertise all year round

Your business can advertise and publicise on the internet 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year.

5)  Grow your customer base form only local to global customers.

Grow your customer base and become an international company

You are no longer limited to advertise on local billboards, magazines, television and radio channels.   You now have Search Engines, partner websites using text ads, banner ads, mobile ads...

6)  Low-cost efficient advertising

 Low cost advertising

Your website runs a NON-STOP PROMOTION of your business! Your customers will always be able to obtain up-to-date and thorough information about your services or products. Instead of having to rely on randomly aired TV or radio commercials, they can simply browse through your website whenever they have time or need to.

7)  You can now place your web site address on your business card to enhance your image.

Enhance your company image

Yes it is true, it makes your business cooler, much cooler.  It is also much more professional having personal email addresses for each person and department in your company. ie. MyBusiness@NotMyBussiness.Com is not as professional and credible as Me@MyBusiness.Co.Za

8)  A website adds credibilty to your new business.

A company that is NOT committed to providing you with a good service or products will not spend the time or money on a website. This ensures the prospective clients that you are not a fly-by-night kind of business.

The disadvantage(s) of having a company web presence:

1)  A suprise visit from the debt collector
 No website = sushi

That one that has been on your back for ages. I am sure at one point of everyones life you have had a tiny bit of gambling debt or that ‘friend’ of your neighbours brothers cousin who didn’t appreciate that digitally altered Proof of Payment printout your friends gave him when they went to collect their new Play Station 3 console.  Really?  Never? I thought every family has one?  Well kneecap replacement surgery can be very expensive.

Take your time and carefully weigh the options above before you decide whether your company should be listed somewhere on the web.

Having a website is just one of the ways that the internet can improve your business.

Further advantages include:

  • Faster response times when emailing clients and not needing to depend on the Postal services.

Email is now an essential communication tools and much cheaper when compared costs of telephones, faxes and snail mail.

  • Information and services.
  • There is a huge amount of information available on the internet ranging from government law, (it’s always a good idea to keep up to date with labour and tax regulations) to technical support and competitive market information. Services include online banking, shopping and reservations.
